Concrete begins hardening after it is placed, but developing strength takes time.
There isn't one universal curing timeline for every concrete project. Temperature, moisture, weather conditions, the concrete mixture and the type of project can all affect how concrete sets and develops strength.
Setting and Curing Aren't the Same Thing
Concrete may become firm enough to appear hardened relatively quickly, but that doesn't mean it has finished developing strength.
Curing is the process of maintaining appropriate moisture and temperature conditions after concrete is placed so it can continue developing the properties it was designed to achieve.
Why Do You Hear About 28 Days?
Concrete strength is commonly evaluated at certain ages, and 28 days is a common reference point for specified compressive strength.
That does not mean every concrete project should be treated exactly the same for 28 days or that concrete suddenly becomes "fully cured" on day 28.
Weather & Project Conditions Matter
Curing requirements and timelines can vary based on the concrete, project and conditions.
Your contractor should determine when the concrete is ready for foot traffic, vehicles, construction loads or other use and determine the appropriate curing and protection requirements.
