Can You Pour Concrete Over Existing Concrete?

Sometimes.
New concrete can be placed over existing concrete in certain situations, but that doesn't mean it is the right solution for every driveway, patio, sidewalk or other concrete project.
The condition of the existing concrete and the requirements of the new project both need to be considered before deciding how to proceed.
Start With the Existing Concrete
Before deciding whether existing concrete can remain in place, the contractor responsible for the project should evaluate the existing slab and surrounding conditions.
Existing concrete may have underlying issues that affect whether it should remain, be repaired or be removed before new concrete is placed.
Because every project is different, that determination should be made by an experienced concrete contractor or other qualified project professional.
Overlay or Start Over?
Depending on the existing concrete and the requirements of the project, a contractor may recommend:
Placing new concrete over the existing slab
Repairing portions of the existing concrete
Removing the existing concrete and preparing the area for a new pour
There isn't one answer that applies to every project.
